My Great Great Grandfather had beautiful handwriting . He was a teenager during the Great Famine . He could speak both English and Irish . I know this because I have a copy of the Census entry for 1901 . Donal Rue died before the next Census in 1910 . Since most of the census records for the previous 80 years were destroyed these documents are our only insight into who lived under the roof of that old house.
Our ancestors live on in us . And the people we are must to some extent reflect the people they were . That is what makes the Census documents such magical things to unearth . They are gems that will be treasured both by current family members and generations yet to come .
